Origins of the Yiddish Language

Yiddish (also known as “Idish” or “Yiddit,” meaning “Jewish”) is a Jewish language that belongs to the Germanic language family. It is one of the most significant languages in Jewish history, as until World War II, most European Jews (Ashkenazim) used it as their main language for daily life (Hebrew was preserved as the sacred language).

The system of vowels is fundamentally different between the two languages, as Yiddish uses the letters “אעוי” for vowel notation. Unlike in Hebrew, these vowel markings cannot be omitted from words.
